HIGHLIGHTS

                    New Day School Graduation 2018

These are some of the highlights from the memorable 2018 graduation, at New Day School.

 

Ms. Lesleyann Samuels, President, of Union of Jamaica Alumni Association Inc USA, (UJAA), was the keynote speaker at New Day Primary and Junior High School's, graduation on July 4, 2018.  She delivered a great speech, very inspiring. The students were impressed. 

 

New Day School Alumni Association NY Chapter Inc., donated a one-time scholarship to Matthew Salmon, who will be attending Calabar High School in September 2018. We celebrated the graduation with other current NDSAA scholarship awardees. In the picture, are: Michelia, Beresford, and their mothers. Ishmael and Jawanza were not present. They were taking their final examinations.Desiree Bowen, sister to Kimberli Bowen, who is an Advisory Director member, played the recorder as a part of a quartet, which included some school friends. Her performance was impressive, and she has received several awards, for her work with the recorder.

New Day School Teachers Attend Gurian Institute “The Gender Lens" Training

New Day School Alumni Association New York Chapter, collaborated with Lesleyann Samuel, President of Union Of Jamaican Alumni Associations (USA) Inc. along with Katey McPherson, Gurian Institute Executive Director, Nevada(USA), to provide professional development, Gender Lens Training- to 7 primary schools, 3 teachers from New Day participated, they are- Ms. Sharon Gordon, Ms. Cardia Rigg, and Mrs. Joan Harrison Graham. The training focused on the differences in academic teaching styles that are necessary for teaching boys versus girls.

 

The training was held at Knutsford Court Hotel, November 29, 2017, in Kingston Jamaica, and was well received, not only by the faculty from the 7 primary schools (30 participants including teachers and principals) but also attendees from the National Education Inspectorate, the Ministry of Education, and some members of Kingston College faculty.

 

  

The New York Chapter will continue to utilize its resources to harness the true potential of the students of New Day School.  We are confident that working together we can help our children realize their fullest potential and become productive members of society thereby ensuring that no one is left behind. 

New Day School Alumni Association Board Members attended the New Day Primary & Junior High School graduation ceremony held  June 30, 2016, at the  United Pentecostal Church, Grants Pen Road. We awarded Michelia Brown 2016 class valedictorian the NDSSA Scholarship and Beresford Williams received the Philip E. Petgrave Scholarship.

Both students were selected as recipients of the awards having demonstrated exceptional academic achievement, earning high grades in the GSAT Examinations. They are now attending Ardenne High School and Gaynstead High School, respectively. We wish the students and the graduates of 2016 continued success.

During our trip to Jamaica, we met with the school Chairman of the Board Mr. Ian Muirhead, the faculty, and Delroy Chuck, Member of Parliament (MP) for the constituency of Saint Andrew North Eastern and the Minister of Justice. I would like to take this opportunity to thank them for their commitment and contribution to the empowerment of students in the Jamaican Diaspora.

In 2015 New Day School Alumni Association Scholarships were awarded to seven recipients: Michelia Brown, Tae-Malik Harrison, Juan- Pablo Walker, Demetre Perry, Gabrielle Gunn, (pictured above) Kurt Hassan Smith (top right) and Marlando Allen. (bottom right)

Kurt and Marlando are now attending Kingston College and St. George’s College, respectively. Jawanza Curate and Ishmael Michael were awarded the Philip E. Petgrave Scholarship. The NDSAA Scholarships are awarded to students with demonstrated financial need and high GSAT scores. We celebrate this year’s scholarship winners and are proud of the hard work and the dedication of the faculty and students of New Day Primary & Junior High School.

Ms. Evelyn Godden Vice President of New Day School Alumni Association New York Chapter; presented Brandon Powell, a laptop on behalf of New Day School Alumni Association on July 29, 2014.  Brandon attends Excelsior High School and is an exceptional student and a recipient of the prestigious Richard D. Simpson Scholarship Fund.


In attendance were Mr. Garfield McDonald, Principal for New Day Primary and Junior High School, Mr. Garth McBean, Attorney At Law and fellow alumnus, faculty members, parents, along with former students/recipients of Richard D. Simpson Scholarship Fund participated in the presentation.

The event was well received; everyone left the event inspired on what both organizations are doing to make a difference in the lives of the students in Jamaica.

New Day School Alumni Association NY Chapter Inc Meet and Greet Roadshow Highlights

The Prime Minister’s office has endorsed the New Day School Alumni Association NY Chapter organization. During our recent trip to Jamaica, we met with Mr. Lincoln Robinson Senior Communication Specialist for  The Most  Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, ON,MP. We provided an overview of NDSAA’s initiatives and the partnership with other sponsors. We took the opportunity to thank the team for their commitment and contribution to New Day School Alumni Association NY Chapter Inc and to the empowerment of students in the Jamaican Diaspora.

New Day School Alumni Association NY Chapter met Grace Kennedy Foundations and Tools directors, Mrs. Carolyn Mahfood & Mrs. Angella  Grandison- Reid, and their staff at the Hanover St. office in Kingston, to thank GK for donating a play gym and several food products  to the students of  New Day Primary & Junior High School.
